Comment: |
Sleep (Hypnagogic) Paralysis is a relatively rare neurological disorder. It is not life threatening, but can have a significant effect on the life of the sufferer. There can be mild to severe disruption of the sufferer's sleep. Prior to obtaining a diagnosis the sufferer may exhibit emotional problems, and family and friends may dismiss the symptoms as nightmares. Sleep paralysis is the brain forgetting the normal routine for preparing the body for sleep. When our body prepares for sleep, the brain releases chemicals that affect the way our muscles act - in sleep paralysis the brain gets the dosage wrong and instead of a slow process of restricting muscle activity it accidentally temporarily paralyses the sufferer. |
