The Befriending Network was established in the UK in 1944, with the aim of improving the quality of life for those with terminal or life-threatening illness. They do this by providing trained volunteers to offer practical and emotional support at home. The person befriended will decide with the volunteer how the relationship will develop.
The Befriender might :-
- meet weekly to listen and talk ,
- accompany the befriendee on hospital visits/trips,
- provide a link with local health and social services and research other sources of help and advice.
The Befriender does not :-
- replace nurses, home helps or social workers, they are not professionals and do not have medical training,
- promote any spiritual beliefs of their own,
- benefit financially from the befriending relationship.
Active in North & West London, Oxford & Oxfordshire. Will put you in touch with alternative agencies in your area.
