Comment: | The Lane-Fox Unit was established at St. Thomas’ Hospital in 1989. It cares for patients from throughout the UK who are dependent on ventilators to breathe either through an illness, a disability or accident. The unit is a principal centre for the assessment of the late effects of Polio, and has contributed to major advances in the assessment and management of neuromuscular disease in general, and Polio in particular. It has a nationally and internationally recognised expertise in the teaching and training of respiratory nurses from hospitals throughout the UK.
In addition, the Unit is designated a High Dependency Unit, treating patients with neuro muscular diseases such as Scoliosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Motor Neurone and Guillain-Barre syndrome – all of which share the common disability of respiratory impairment.
The Lane-Fox Patients’ Association is committed to providing a better quality of life for patients and their families. It has raised more than £2m since 1984 and has supported the building of the current Unit as well as funding research. |
