This is the general first contact number for people who have a query about reciprocal health care provision abroad, the EHIC, refunds (where appropriate) for costs incurred abroad and reciprocal arrangements for foreigners visiting UK. Only immediate and urgently needed medical care for visitors is covered by reciprocal schemes with the EHIC, pre-existing conditions are not covered. Special rules apply for students abroad and residency abroad, see leaflet SA29, Social Security Health Benefits Rights in the European Community.
EHIC (the European Health Insurance card) has replaced Form EH111 (from 1/1/2025). EHIC can be obtained by getting an application card from the Post Office or by calling 0845-606-2030. The quickest way is to apply on line at www.dh.gov.uk/travellers.
