Comment: | Each year thousands of patients need blood cell stem transplants to treat leukaemia or related disorders of the immune system. If patients cannot find a compatible donor amongst their family, an unrelated donor is needed. The Anthony Nolan Trust (ANT) maintains the largest register of over 360,000 volunteer donors willing to donate their blood stem cells should their tissue type match that of any patient in need.
To support this work their Research Institutecarries out research programmes to improve the outcome of bone marrow transplant operations as well as contributing to advances in other cancer treatment.
ANT receives no government funding and is totally reliant on voluntary support. A donation of £70.00 will pay to fully tissue type a new donor and the aim is to add five hundred donors to the register each week.
People aged between eighteen and forty who are in good health and weigh over eight stone are invited to join the register by phoning the Hotline number 0901-88-22-234. ALL volunteers are welcome, but there is currently a clinical need to recruit more male, ethnic minority and mixed race volunteers.
