Comment: | Disability Living Allowance is for anyone under sixty five who needs help to get through the simple tasks of daily living (eg. personal care, feeding, cooking, mobility, etc). Applications may be received up to the day before the applicants 66th birthday, as long as they had their disability before they were sixty five.
There are two components of DLA - Care and Mobility. The Care Component is to help pay for any help the person needs, and the Mobility Component to help with mobility costs. DLA is normally paid four-weekly, combined with other benefits. It is tax free and does not usually affect any other allowance you may be getting. It is not means-tested. Approval to receive this allowance may help you to get other benefits as well. You must be over five years old and under sixty five years when you QUALIFY for the allowance. Since April 2001, severely disabled children aged three and four who have difficulty walking may qualify for the higher rate of DLA for getting around. |
