Comment: | The Royal College of Nursings committment to sexual health is advances in numerous ways. There are sexual health advisors working in the professional nursing department, who typically deal with policy and practice issues relating to sexual health and nursing, including government and media relations. There is also a Sexual Health Forum, which is free to RCN members. It holds an annual conference and produces a twice-yearly Bulletin. Nurses can phone RCN Direct to be given a list of forums they can join.
In 2001, the RCN produced its own Sexual Health Strategy - guidance for nursing staff. The RCN also manages an accredited and academically validated course, entitled Sexual Health Skills - a distance learning programme for the development of practice and life long learning. This course was developed by funding from the Teenage Pregnancy Unit and DH. Details by phone (020-8331-8692) or on the internet (Web address for the course is: www.rcn.org.uk/sexualhealthlearning and e-mail address is [email protected]).
The RCN has also collaborated with nurses and physicians of other organisations to produce Sexual Health Competencies, a clear initiative in line with current practice and developmental needs. |
