The Samaritans provide confidential emotional support to people in despair and to those experiencing feelings which may lead to suicide. Their vision is to make Samaritan emotional support available, at any time. They aim to provide people with a better understanding of suicide and the value of expressing feelings that may lead to suicide.
Anyone needing emotional support can speak to a trained volunteer, for the price of a local call to a national number: 08457-90-90-90 (1850-609-090 in Republic of Ireland). Alternatively, there are over two hundred branches nationwide, which can be found in the local telephone directory. Samaritans have also recently launched a new text message only number, available twenty four hours a day on 07725-909090.
Samaritans also works to increase the awareness of befriending as a means of suicide prevention, to support member organisations, to respond to overseas calls for help where needed and to develop volunteer action to prevent suicide - see the befriending website www.befrienders.org.
