Comment: | BDF Newlife, the child health and research charity, was founded in 1991 as the Birth Defects Foundation, by parents, doctors and business people dedicated to fighting what is now the biggest threat to child health.
As many as one in sixteen babies have an inborn condition (birth defect). Inborn conditions are syndromes, diseases and malformations. Some are minor, others are debilitating and/or life-threatening. They can cause distress and heartache, affecting ability, physical and mental development, senses, organs, limbs and life span.
BDF Newlifes activities and services include:
+ funding vital medical research to understand, prevent, combat and treat inborn conditions;
+ a Nurse Service that comforts, informs and supports families and those at risk;
+ direct grants to affected families, funding vital equipment and assistance;
+ campaigning to raise the level of awareness helping people to act, prior to pregnancy, to reduce the risks. |
