Comment: | Cot death is a term commonly used to describe a sudden and unexpected infant death that is that is initially unexplained. The equivalent medical term is "sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI)". Some sudden and unexpected infant deaths can be explained by a thorough post mortem examination. Cot deaths that remain unexplained after post-mortem examination are usually registered as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths is the UK's leading cot death charity. Its aims are to prevent unexpected infant death and promote baby health. To fulfil its aims FSID:
+ funds research;
+ supports families whose babies have died suddenly and unexpectedly;
+ disseminates information about cot death and baby care among professionals and the public.
FSID operates throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. As well as the staff team in head office there are also eight regional co-ordinators which actively promote FSID's information across the country.
In Autumn 2004, the Cot Death Society was closed, donating all of its baby monitors to the FSID and its other support services were absorbed into the FSID, since the aims of the two organisations were so similar. |
