Comment: | The Essex Autistic Society was originally formed in the early 1970s by a few dedicated parents of young children with autism who were frustrated by the lack of specialised educational facilities in the area. Doucecroft School in Kelvedon (see separate record), the Societys first service, was opened in 1977, initially with five children.
The Society has grown significantly since then and is still expanding. The Essex Autistic Society provides:
+ school services at Doucecroft;
+ an FE Department, based in Kelvedon, catering for up to fifteen students aged sixteen to nineteen;
+ five Adult Residential units provide a range of services for adults with autism and related conditions;
+ an Adult Day Centre, the Jigsaw Study Centre, which provides structured activities for adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. A number of users live within the Societys residential accommodation but external service users also benefit from this resource.
+ a Community Support service and family support. |
