Comment: | The Butterfly Garden is a project for students with learning difficulties, as well as for those looking to escape the world and those looking to re-enter it. In 2002, Chris Evans, the owner, was invited to take up a part time teaching position on a gardening programme designed for students with learning difficulties and behavioural problems. He suggested that the project might centre around a garden built on his own site, so it was started on the edge of a commercial Nursery and garden centre on the outskirts of Cheltenham known as Dundry Nurseries.
The garden offers a wide range of provision, from formal to wild, covers half an acre and has two classroom spaces. One is a traditional thirty seater classroom and is equipped to offer a teaching space in rough weather (and it is hoped will eventually support art, craft and drama as well as gardening). The other (completed in January 2005) is in the form of an open highly shaded pergola for use in warmer weather.
The Butterfly Garden is a registered member of Thrive, the horticultural therapy charity. |
