Gloucestershire Wheelchair Service is a countywide service. They provide wheelchairs, pressure cushions and special seating to the residents of Gloucestershire with a permanent disability. Clients must meet eligibility criteria based on clinical need for each type of wheelchair available. Assessments are undertaken in clinics, special schools, the client's home and other community settings as required. Wheelchairs and pressure management cushions are provided on long-term loan. All wheelchairs issued are maintained free of charge by the wheelchair service. They operate a Voucher Scheme whereby a client can choose to have a wheelchair of higher specification than their clinical need indicates by contributing to the cost. Special Seating is bought in from outside contractors, who attend the assessment centres on a regular basis. Electric wheelchairs are provided for clients who require them full-time indoors to enable indepenent mobility. The electric wheelchairs can be upgraded for outdoor use at a later date following assessment.
