Comment: | The objectives of this charitable organisation are to encourage, promote and teach swimming to disabled people of all ages and all disabilities using a specialist technique known as the Halliwick Concept and to aim for enjoyment and safety as well as proficiency in swimming.
The Halliwick Concept is a Ten Point Programme, devised by James McMillan to teach swimming to all. All points must be mastered to produce a swimmer who is truly 'water happy'.
The Ten Points help a process of development through mental adjustment, balance control and movement which leads to personal independence in the water. These three concepts are the essential components of motor learning.
Other activities of the organisation include giving talks, practical demonstrations and training courses. Regional and national galas are organised. Training books and videos are available. There are nearly two hundred affiliated Clubs nationally and internationally, most with a strong social life. HAST was previously known as the Association of Swimming Therapy. |
