Comment: | The RNIB Talking Book Service contains almost thirteen thousand unabridged titles on audio CD's using DAISY technology. This means blind and partially sighted readers can bookmark the page they are reading, or skip to a chapter - the way a sighted reader would read a printed book. Subscription to the service costs £50.00 per year for customers using their own player, or £70.00 which includes the loan of a player from the RNIB. They encourage funding from local authorities for readers to use the service, on the basis that they already supply library services for sighted readers.
The books are all recorded using professional actors, narrators and sometimes the authors themselves, and they have recently converted their analogue tapes to digital CD. The books are sent out to readers using a fast turnaround, automated CD burning system through which when a book is returned, another one can be issued the same day. The CD's are delivered through the postal system in a simple cardboard wallet, which the customer uses to return their books. |
