Meningitis and Meningococcal Septicaemia can strike without warning and can kill within hours. Some survivors are left with permanent disabilities such as deafness, brain damage and amputations. Babies, young children and teenagers are most at risk. The Meningitis Trust, an International Charity and Grant Making Trust, was formed in 1986 by people who had a direct, sometimes tragic, experience of meningitis. It leads the fight against meningitis by providing the following services: twenty four hour nurse-lead helpline; financial grants; specialist counsellors across the UK; training for health and education professionals; home visits. Wholly dependent on voluntary contributions, their aims are helping people with meningitis and their families and increasing awareness of the disease. They offer emotional (including bereavement), practical and financial support to those who have been affected by Meningitis and supplyinformation and non-medical support. Help groups exist around the country and world wide.
