Comment: | The Jewish Association for the Mentally Ill (JAMI) was established in 1989 by parents, relatives and friends of those suffering from mental illness. JAMI is the only Jewish charity concerned exclusively with promoting a positive approach to mental health in the Jewish community. They provide essential services for those affected and all who care for them, such as day care, social activities, counselling, social work, information, etc. JAMI is committed to providing activities embodying the Jewish culture and values.
Funding comes largely from charitable donations, fund raising events and a charity shop, but also includes contributions from Local Authorities.
There is a Carers Support Group which meets regularly at JAMI House. Recently they have set up 'JAMI Nights', a new group for people aged eighteen to thirty with mental health issues, essentially a social club which provides a non-judgemental environment for those who find social interaction challenging. Meetings are held at JAMI House on Monday evenings.
