Comment: | The Healthcare Commission exists to promote improvements in the quality of healthcare and public health in England and Wales. They work with the National Audit Office, the Audit Commission and the Commission for Social Care Inspection to promote improvement in patient care and efficiency in the NHS and public health.
In England, the Healthcare Commission is responsible for assessing and reporting on the performance of both NHS and independent healthcare organisations, to ensure they are providing a high standard of care. They also encourage providers to continually improve their services and the way they work.
In Wales, their role is more limited, and relates mainly to working on national reviews that cover both England and Wales, as well as their annual report on the state of healthcare. They work closely with the Health Inspectorate Wales, who are responsible for the NHS in Wales, and the Care Standards Inspectorate Wales, who are responsible for independent healthcare in Wales.
