Comment: | The Bar Pro Bono Unit was established by Lord Goldsmith QC, the Unit’s President, in May 1996 to provide pro bono – free – legal advice and representation in deserving cases where public funding (Legal Aid) is not available and where the applicant is unable to afford legal assistance. Since opening, over four thousand applications for assistance have been received, with help given in more than fifteen hundred cases. The Unit helps by putting solicitors, advice agencies and members of the public in touch with barristers who can:
+ give advice - either in writing or in conference;
+ represent applicants in any Court / Tribunal in England or Wales;
+ assist with mediation - all free of charge.
The Unit is able to call on the services of over 1,350 barristers from all over England and Wales. |
