Comment: | The Bath Pain Management Unit (PMU) is a centre of excellence for the treatment of chronic pain in adults, young people and adolescents. It is part of the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, situated in the centre of Bath. The PMU takes referrals from all over the country, either via GP (you can use Choose and Book) or Consultant. Programmes are residential, with patients staying either in flats close by, or if there are self-care problems, on a hospital ward.
The treatment approach is Contextual Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. The treatment team includes physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists, nurses and occupational therapists who aim to help people with pain return to the activities that are important to them, even though they have pain. Patients work in small groups (maximum ten). Outcome data is available via the website, or by phoning 01225-473427 and requesting a pack.
The unit works in close collaboration with the University of Bath to ensure that the programmes are evidence based and highly effective.
