Comment:

Emmaus is a registered charity modelled on the movement started by Abbe Pierre in France over fifty years ago. It is a non-religious international movement with four hundred self-supporting Communities in forty four countries - there are thirteen such communities in the UK. It aims to create a community, a home, a place of safety, where former homeless people can live, work and rebuild their self-respect and independence. Everyone who joins an Emmaus Community will sign off primary benefits (Income Support and JSA) and work in collaboration with other "companions", collecting, refurbishing and recycling furniture and other goods donated through the community at Emmaus shops. Drugs or alcohol are not to be brought on to the Emmaus Community premises and anti-social or violent behaviour will not be tolerated. All companions must play a full, participating role in the life and work of the Community.
