Organisation:Hospital Education Service

Comment:

The Hospital education Service aims to provide continuity of education for sick children in a happy and relaxed atmosphere, although medical procedures always take priority. School hours in hospital when a child is well enough are 9:30 to 11:30am, and 1:00 to 3:00pm (School term times only). The qualified teachers cover a broad and balanced curriculum over a period of a week. If a patient's stay is longer than three days, the teaching staff will contact the child's home school to liaise about work to be covered. They may help to oversee work sent from school. When necessary invigilation of exams, internal or external can be arranged. When a child is discharged from hospital, but is unable to return to school for some time, the Hospital education Service can make a request for tuition at home; this is provided on medical grounds and must be approved by the LEA.
