The Health Department's Welfare Food Scheme enables children under five to receive, free of charge, 189ml (one third of a pint) of milk for each day they attend approved day care facilities for two hours or more. Babies aged under one may instead receive infant formula milk (dried baby milk) made up to 189ml (one third of a pint). Day care providers, such as Childminders, Nurseries and Playgroups, who have been approved to supply milk under the Scheme can be reimbursed the cost of the milk they supply. They contact the Welfare Food Reimbursement Unit (WFRU) to claim for free milk for the children under five that they look after. The unit will give details of how to claim and how much to claim. From 2005 the Welfare Food Scheme is being replaced with a new scheme called Healthy Start, which will extend the range of available products to include fresh fruit and vegetables. Phase 1 of Healthy Start has already begun ib Devon and Cornwall. Phase 2 - the rest of Great Britain - is expected later in 2006. Any changes to the Nursery Provisoion of the Welfare Food Scheme will not be made until Phase 2. For information about the Welfare Food Scheme for parents and expectant mothers, etc, see separate record.
