Comment: | The Gloucestershire Mandarin School (GMS) is part of the Chinese Parents and Children Association, which aims to advance educational, recreational, linguistic and cultural issues for children and young people of Chinese origin. They encourage friendship and communication with races from different cultural backgrounds and provide activities on issues for Chinese Language and Culture, e.g. Mandarin Chinese learning, Chinese calligraphy and dance.
Most adult classes are funded by Adult Education Services, and currently run as follows:
+ Saturdays - six classes for children and one for adults at Sir Thomas Rich's Grammar School. There are about sixty children attending these classes;
+ Sundays - two classes for children and six for adults at Pates' Grammar School.
The students come from all over Gloucestershire. There is also a Learning Support Club, set up to help children of Chinese heritage to improve their educational and social opportunities. It is an ongoing project and runs at weekends at the Mandarin School in both Gloucester and Cheltenham. |
